Why Insulate?

Why insulate my home or building?

Heating and cooling account for 50% to 70% of the energy used in the average Canadian home. Inadequate insulation and air leakage are leading causes of energy waste in most homes and buildings.

Insulation saves money, makes your house more comfortable by helping to maintain a uniform temperature throughout the house, and makes walls, ceilings and floors warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

The attic is one of the most important areas of a home to insulate. According to the Department of Natural Resources (NRCan), up to 65% of a home's energy loss is through the attic.

Insulation is like dressing properly for winter. If you go outside in the middle of winter with nothing but a windbreaker on, your body temperature will go down. A house with siding, but no insulation will see a similar effect. Now, if you wear a nice fluffy sweater underneath that windbreaker you will be protected from the wind and from the cold outside air. The sweater will hold your body heat in to keep you warm. Insulation is that sweater, it creates a barrier that separates the cold outside air from the warm, comfortable inside air.

Insulation works for you all year long: in the winter it keeps your heated air inside and the cold air outside. In the summer it keeps your cool air inside, and the hot summer air outside.

How can I tell if I need to add insulation?

In the winter:

Walls cold to touch

Cold floors

High heating costs

Uneven heating levels within building

Mold growing on walls

In the summer:

Uncomfortably hot inside

High cooling costs

Ineffectiveness of air conditioning system

Mold growing in basement
